How An Unexpected Friendship With A Wolf Transformed A Whole Town
Despite their incredible beauty and their obvious similarities with our considerably tamer canine companions, everyone knows not to play with wolves. So when wildlife photographer Nick Jans and his Labrador encountered a wild wolf behind their home, adrenaline started pumping through them both.
When the wolf approached the Labrador, Nick could only stand helplessly by and watch. But what he didn’t know then, on that cold winter day of 2003 was that that encounter was the beginning of a relationship that defied all logic – and fundamentally transformed an entire community. During the winter of 2003, a jet-black wolf showed up on the edge of suburban Juneau, Alaska. But this wolf didn’t bear his teeth and growl aggressively. Instead, it seemed to long for companionship. Wildlife photographer Nick Jans was on his back porch when he saw the wolf for the first time. Despite the danger, Nick’s Labrador went to meet the visitor.
National Geographic.
Nick, who had photographed and tracked wolves for years, immediately knew that the wolf was wild.So he was shocked when his Labrador suddenly started to play with him. He hurriedly grabbed his camera, and began to capture the unexpected moment.
National Geographic.
After a while, the wolf returned into the wilderness, but it wasn’t long before he returned. The wolf would come to Nick’s house to greet him often and sometimes it even followed Nick when the photographer went skiing. And the wolf was always gentle, says Nick.
“This wolf was downright relaxed and tolerant from the start, as if he had dropped out of the sky like a unicorn,” the photographer told National Geographic.
National Geographic.
Years passed and Nick spent much time documenting the wolf. He eventually named the wolf Romeo. At first, many of the small town’s residents didn’t trust Romeo, but they soon realized that he was a wolf unlike any other.
National Geographic.
Romeo soon became known by everyone in the area. People took their dogs to Mendenhall Glacier Park so their dogs could meet Romeo. There were never any serious incidents.
National Geographic.
Not only did Romeo make plenty of dog friends in and around Juneau, he even sometimes interacted and played with humans.
“The wolf would bring out toys that he’d stashed. One was a Styrofoam float. Romeo would pick it up and bring it to [my friend] Harry to throw. He clearly understood the same sort of behaviors that we see in dogs,” Nick said.
National Geographic.
“The amazing thing was Romeo’s understanding. It wasn’t just our understanding and tolerance. It was the combination of his and ours and the dogs. We were these three species working out how to get along harmoniously. And we did,” said Nick.
National Geographic.
Romeo lived on the outskirts of Juneau for six years. He became an ambassador for nature and a powerful symbol for the entire community.
National Geographic.
“He was a pure wild wolf. He was not a pet, as some suggested, that had been released, because then he would have been coming to us for food. He was his own gatekeeper and came and went as he pleased. Sometimes he disappeared for weeks. He clearly was catching and eating wild food with great skill,” explained Nick.
National Geographic.
After six years, Romeo’s time in the community ended. He passed away in 2010, but residents will never forget how he transformed the village.
“The average life span of a wolf in the wild is three years. Romeo was already full grown when he showed up, and then he lived among us for six-plus more years. So he was at least eight years old at the time of his death,” Nick says.
National Geographic.
Shortly after Romeo passed away, the city of Juneau commemorated the wolf, creating a special plaque to honor him. The plaque is installed by the lake he used to frequent. What a beautiful touch!
National Geographic.
That three such different species were able to live alongside peacefully and in complete harmony is so inspiring. It really shows you how wonderful the world and nature can be!
Students may have a new incentive to take a step back from their busy schedules and indulge in a study break this year — Emory’s first full-time therapy dog.
Beowulf (pronounced “Bay-Wolf”), a Native American Indian dog/ Golden Retriever mix, is the newest addition to Emory’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) office. At only seven months old, Beowulf is in training to become a full-time therapy dog and will be certified once she is at least a year old and has completed 150 hours of training with her handler and owner, psychologist Colleen Duffy.
“As a therapy dog, [Beowulf is] trained to be attuned to people’s emotions,” Duffy said. “Some people can connect more with animals than therapists, so it can bridge a therapeutic relationship.”
Although Emory has utilized pet-facilitated therapy programs in the past, notably during periods of high stress and rigorous work, such as finals week, Beowulf will be the University’s first full-time therapy dog.
She will continue the trend of meeting with students during these high stress weeks, but she will also be available for individual and group psychotherapy sessions throughout the school year.
After beginning the search process in July, Duffy was able to adopt and begin training with Beowulf in early September, and she has already begun outreach programs with her in preparation for their certification together.
Beowulf has taken advantage of numerous opportunities to interact with students and faculty throughout the community through her attendance at the Candler Opportunities Fair on Sept. 10 as well as the President Jimmy Carter Town Hall meeting on Sept. 16. She will also attend Candler’s Seeking Sanity in Seminary event on Oct. 1 and the International Student Coffee Hour on Oct. 23.
Beowulf is comfortable around large crowds, gentle around people and hypoallergenic, meaning that she has a reduced risk of causing allergic reactions. Native American Indian Dogs, in particular, are known for their intelligent, docile, versatile and sociable qualities, according to Founder and President of Animals Deserve Better Kimberly Brenowitz, who selected Beowulf for the position at CAPS and is working with Duffy to train Beowulf.
While psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is an effective tool for some people, having the opportunity to pet an animal can also be therapeutic, according to Duffy.
In the future, CAPS intends to continue exploring innovative ways to connect with a wider audience of students through outreach and therapeutic initiatives so that all students feel comfortable accessing mental health services when they need it in order to thrive at Emory.
Assistant Vice President of CAPS Wanda Collins hopes that the addition of Beowulf will bring increased awareness of the counseling center and its programs. She also believes that Beowulf will be able to help students feel more comfortable approaching the CAPS office and CAPS tables at events due to the “soothing presence” of therapy dogs.
“There are only a handful of counseling centers in the country that have therapy dogs on staff, so it’s a pretty new and innovative thing to do,” Collins said.
Animal-assisted activity may even help some students overcome their fear of canines. After meeting Beowulf while walking through campus, a student who was initially scared of dogs was able to stand within six feet of Beowulf after observing her gentle nature, a feat that was “huge” and “quite wonderful,” Duffy said.
“I have recognized how beneficial service dogs are to a number of persons with physical disabilities and veterans,” Duffy said. “I strongly believe that Beowulf can be a healing presence for many and also help others flourish. She is a unique dog and is already showing how talented she is.”
When not in the counseling office, Beowulf simply walks through campus and greets anyone who crosses her path.
“Most everyone loves [Beowulf]. If we went outside right now, there would probably be at least two or three groups of people who would stop to see her,” Duffy said.
Candler School of Theology second year Tanner Alan White acknowledged Beowulf’s “submissive and docile” demeanor around students after seeing her firsthand at the Candler Opportunities Fair and praised her role as a “relaxing and welcome distraction” despite Emory’s “institutional setting.”
A full-time therapy dog is “a great asset to the Emory community,” according to first year Master of Divinity student at the Candler School of Theology Anna Lautenschlager, who stated that seeing Beowulf “definitely brightened [her] day.”
College freshman Micah Wright agreed that he was likely to greet Beowulf if he saw her, stating that for him, personally, “any opportunity to interact with a dog, especially a well-trained therapy dog, is a soothing yet exciting experience that gives [him] a chance to be distracted from everything else and calm down.
Hi Karen First, we have had all three dogs checked through Embark with stellar results (not surprising). The tests of all 194 canine genetic disorders for all three NAIDs were negative. Just some more perfect boys from your kennel. Carol A. 06/2021

KAREN,
Our female NAID from Hinto Winyan and Nivlek well,
She is amazing. We have a trainer ( positive reinforcement ONLY) that comes to our home weekly to work with us/her. She has mastered loose leash walking, all basic commands, and is now learning her obstacle course( climbing step ups, going through tunnels, jumping over rails, etc). She still has a little fear reactivity to strangers but trainer says we will begin work in a group setting within the next few weeks. He did lots of research on the breed so is aware this is an Inherent trait and wants to take this slowly with lots of care and consideration. She is doing SO much better with our cats. She will occasionally get excited and try to chase but most of the time will “ leave it” when given the command. She doesn’t want to hurt them. She just wants to play but doesn’t realize her size/strength. She will, on occasion, cuddle up next to her favorite Savannah and take a nap. She goes to the door when she wants to go outside and gets in her crate when she is tired. Another fascinating thing is her intuition when something is wrong. She notices and will point out every little bruise, scrape, even the tiniest ant bite. I had a bicycle wreck and thought all my injuries had healed. She repeatedly put her nose /licked on my knee. It turned out I had a small piece of gravel embedded deep beneath the skin. She was aware of it before I was. She is, of course, still a puppy so we have lots of those toddler moments when she gets into mischief( she chewed right through our wood coffee table so we bought a metal one that is pretty much indestructible , lol, with the added bonus she loves to stand on it, lol). She travels with us when we go in our RV and is a champ. She loves exploring and hiking with me especially when she gets to play in a lake/river/etc. We are SO happy with her. I will check in from time to time and let you know how she’s doing. Teresa
Hi Karen,
I thought I would let you know our Nocona Mato Evans passed away today, 01/23/21 after 17.5 years of love in our family. Truly a part of our pack. Howled over the years every time we walked the kids to school. We took him on all vacations and was most at home camping with us in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota. Thank you and we may be contacting you for a new pup if you have any. Thank you for the experience. Such a smart creature! We were better for having had him in our life. His grandfather was Fantastic Fred.
Hi Karen,
HI KAREN
Well, Shila will be 5 months old on February 15th. Our little Alaskan Indian Dog female went to the vet yesterday for her final rattlesnake booster shot. She weighed in at 48.6 lbs which was 7.5 lb gain in 4 week's.
Balls of all shapes and sizes, especially ones that squeak or make noises are among her favorite toys. She loves to roll them around and toss them in in the air. We were surprised when she started bringing them to us and quickly learned to drop them or release them into our hand so we could throw them for her. At first she just loved the chase, but now it's an all out game of fetch. Our Native American Shepherds love toys, but neither of them ever played fetch.
Shila had her second session of grooming last week. She has quickly learned that grooming is not so bad and feels good. She has stopped by biting at the brushes and will now pick a brush up if she finds it and brings it to me to brush her.
I started doing my own grooming with Utah at a self serve grooming parlor when our groomer retired. He came out looking better when I did it and its great bonding time. Now I take each of them at a different time for special one on one time with my them.
As you can see from the pictures I took tonight, she has completely changed in color and appearance from the solid red chocolate puppy she was. Shila didn't have a mask when we got her and look at the beautiful mask she is developing now! You can't see it in the pictures, but she has a 3 in long black streak down the middle of the upper half of her tail with a red chocolate tip of about an inch.
The pictures are a true depiction of her actual coloring. I need to update her licensing, micro chip and ownership records on her coloring. She is so unusual, I don't really know what color to list her as. I need your help...What would you suggest?
It's like each day she gives us a new surprise in her looks.
We really enjoy watching her transformation. With her green eyes, she has gone from being a beautiful puppy to a stunning beauty. Can't wait to see where she will take us as she grows up.
Not only is she beautiful on the outside, she has a beautiful, sweet soul too. Shila has become quite a cuddler. She loves to give and receive affection. And she continues to train easily as she wants to be with us and please us.
Utah, our big, majestic Native American Shepherd weighed in at 98 lbs yesterday. He loves his puppy and is so glad to to have a Shila as his new partner in life. Her arrival has brought joy back to his life. Shila is just as attached to him. They are quite the pair.
As I'm sure it you can tell, we are in smitten with the latest addition to our family. She too is one of a kind and we love Shila to death.
Hello Karen!
Thank you SO much for our Native American Shepherd female from Wynaway & Sala Toloko, she is such a sweet girl. We decided to name her Ridley. She is perfect. She never whined the whole 10 hours home and she slept through the night last night! And not a single accident yet - she’s so smart! I am amazed already at the temperament and personality. She is truly wonderful and more than I was ever expecting. She has already gotten the hang of playing with our two dogs and the neighbors dogs - it’s so fun to watch them all run through the grass and explore. Thank you again so much. I will definitely keep you updated and send pics.
I attached a pic of her hanging out at the rest stop on the way home.
Best,
Sam
Good Morning Karen
We love our Willow. Doing very well at 12 weeks. She is smart & loving. Very trainable. Expecting she has a lot of potential. Especially enjoy our daily walk/jogs. You've put together some good dogs. Love this Shalom Shepherd female from Besorah & Chewy. Mary

NOT A CARRIER! GOOD NEWS! ZARA IS NOT A CARRIER FOR ANY GENETIC DISEASES THAT EMBARK TESTS FOR.
Merry Christmas Karen,
Mine is alot more merry with Lozen. (NAID female from Wakita & Cheveyo). Quick story about her. We were walking in the forest about a month ago where we live. She jumped on the other side of me and went on point but stayed right beside me growling. I looked where she was looking and about 20 yards away was a mountain lion. She had instinctively placed herself between me and the lion. The stared at each other about 20 seconds and the lion decided to wonder off for an easier meal I guess. Thanks so much for my wonderful 7 month old friend!!
Hi Karen,
As a customer, I wanted to express my gratitude for your patience, guidance, and flexibility working with us to get our puppy home. As a new owner of one of your Shalom Shepherd dogs, I really want to emphasize that you truly have built and created something special with the NAID breed.
Our new puppy, Baloo, arrived last week and is truly magnificent. He has adapted graciously to his new home here in Southern California, where the sunshine really accentuates his handsomeness! In our first few days together, we started some basic training and he’s already learned several basic commands and demonstrated great emotional intelligence for a 3 month old pup! Also, after his initial checkup at the vet, not only was he deemed healthy and hearty, but he stole the hearts of all the doctors and staff!
We’ll provide an update to you as he continues to grow- after his next round of vaccines, we’ll be able to take him to the beach and mountains. In the meantime, keep doing what you’re doing!
Best
Stuart and Elena
i Karen!!
Hope all is well with you. Everything is going great with my dark sable shalom shepherd Male Koga. His father was River Odyssey and mother was Todah.. born Nov 12, 2018. Thought I'd give you an updated picture of how big he is. 45lbs now and counting!! Anyways I just want to once again thank you very much for this beautiful boy and how lucky I am to have him in my life. And how grateful I am to you for bringing such joy into my home..
Thank you very much
Tova 😁
Hi Karen,
I’m not sure you would remember us, but we have a Native American Shepherd from you. He’s about 5 years old and he is the most amazing dog.
Yesterday he protected us from a coyote while we were out on a walk in the woods, repeatedly driving the coyote away from us. He is totally fine but taking him to the vet for precautions today.
He is just the best dog and is exactly what you intended him to be. Versatile, healthy, intelligent and super connected to our family.
We will always have a NAS in our family! Nate
Yes, Reign loves the snow more then anything... He loves to play with his 2 best friends, Sierra and Oso. Rolling, jumping and creating mayhem in the forest. He is quite the talker too. We have about 7 feet of snow in our front yard, he would lay out there all day watching people and cars go by. He is becoming a good watch dog as well. Letting us know when a stranger goes by.
He loves people and other dogs. He hasn't yet met someone he doesn't like. .

Dear Karen
Thunder has been with us for about one month now and we love him so dearly. He is friendly and playful puppy. He is leaning to be potty trained walk properly and just loves people. Fantastic dog we thank you for!
Rene
Hey! I thought I'd give you a bit of a follow up! I adopted a pup from you a couple of years ago- I was too uninvolved in my parents surprise to know what litter she is in fact from. But I'd like to tell you all about her!
Her name is Tehya Kuma. She is the absolute love of my life. She doesn't go anywhere without me ( vise versa ) I've never had a dog that was so loving and connected with me as she is. Thank you so much for pointing her out to me. I know they wanted to adopt Lusaka, but she wouldn't have been able to be spayed/neutered in time for Christmas. So instead, you offered me this little girl that was being a little left behind and picking her was the best thing I've ever done in my life. Here are some pictures of her now! I couldn't thank you enough! - Dier
Karen...it has been a long time and my NAID, Shikoba, turned 9 yrs.old in September. Now that he is about 1/2 way through his life, I am just writing to tell you that he is well. His parents, Petaga and Tate, produced a wonderful male pup who has transformed my family. He has been our “rock” and his loving devotion to our kids (both biological and extended) has been like nothing I have ever seen in a pet. He is simply an amazing dog.
I do have to say that you were right to at first resist my request to purchase just one dog. In the early days we struggled with his separation anxiety but our discussions about it prior to him coming to our family strengthened our resolve to get through it. He did adjust and eventually settled into our family routine, but now that our youngest has left for college he still sits by the door - waiting. I do wish that I had two...but living in NYC with one 130lb dog is hard enough!!!
Aloha, Karen!
I just wanted to let you know that we arrived safely home and had a wonderful drive! When we got home our other dogs really, really liked her! Took to her right away and she was good with them!
She's just beautiful! We are so happy, Karen ! Thank you for the wonderful tour! Mikey and Trinity and I were so impressed and we just want to thank you so much!
I hope you have many, many blessings! You and all those beautiful dogs! If we are in the neighborhood we will definitely come and visit you. I wish we lived closer, we would visit a lot! In the meantime you take care of yourself and thank you again for this beautiful, beautiful puppy!
God bless and we'll talk soon!
Aloha, hank you for your effort in breeding the perfect dog.
Karen,
We love the NAID puppy we brought home this summer. His name is Logan. He is fitting in perfect with our family. Him and our girl NAID are best friends.
He is 47 pounds at 4 months. Logan is mellow, outgoing, and very sweet. Everyone loves him. He has been the fastest puppy we have had to house break.
Thank you for your efforts in breeding the perfect dog.😊
Thanks,
Kevinevin
Hey Karen!! I know it's been a while since we spoke last. My name is Sahara , my husband's name is Eric.
I am not sure if you would remember us or not. We bought our boy Hunter from you in 2011. He is an Ogala x Meo pup born 2-23-11. Very much still a puppy at heart even though he is approaching 7 years old!!! We can't believe it has been that long already
We got to meet you and spend some time there when we picked him up in person. Ill never forget when you walked out of the garage and said "watch this", you howled, then the dogs began a wave of howling all the way into the woods!!! That moment was breathtaking and I will always cherish that memory and experience! When we were able to meet Hunter's parents and uncles, grandparents, aunts, cousins, etc...it was just amazing! Another memory that I will never forget!
My husband was in the Marine Corps stationed in KY at the time. We were getting ready to move to Georgia right after we picked him up.
Hunter has been such a blessing to our family. The puppy years were a bit painful but hey!, puppies aren't supposed to be "easy", they are just like toddlers!! They need training and guidance too!
We had a 2 year old son and a baby girl on the way the same year we brought Hunter into our home :)
Shortly thereafter in 2013, our son was diagnosed with autism and our daughter was also diagnosed with autism later in 2014. My husband was on a combat deployment to Afghanistan during the time we found out our children were going to require a lot of special needs. Hunter has always been amazing with the kiddos despite their ups and downs. The kids can be challenging at times, and Hunter helps us out so much with them. When they play in the yard, he watches them and keeps them out of trouble and from getting hurt. He has a gentle caregiving instinct, almost like herding. He does this in a manner so unsuspecting, the kids have no idea he is there for them. As crazy as this sounds, Hunter has zero prey drive. He ignores everything that is going on around him that would typically distract a dog, even an NAID! He is primarily focused on the safety of the family and alerting us to danger. Even if it means him tackling a dangerous snake in the backyard to keep it from biting the children. Biggest scare of my life. He didn't care if he got hurt, as long as we were ok. After looking over the dead snake, I was able to identify it, and if it would have bitten the children, we would be on the way to the ER.
My husband Eric, has been fighting chronic PTSD from his 2013 deployment to Afghanistan. He also suffered a traumatic brain injury from an IED explosion that took his balance, and complicated his PTSD in such a manner that they have hospitalized him 3 times. Eric and Hunter were approved for Service dog training through an ADI training facility this year, but with Hunter approaching 7 years old, they will not be able to complete the training before the age cut-off (7 years). We wanted to begin his training years ago, but he was still active duty and this wasn't allowed. He was found unfit to continue his military service and forced to retire this year.
Now he is having difficulty training Hunter due to his memory loss from a fall he had in 2014. The non profit that is providing the financial assistance to pay for Hunter's training will not allow me to train Hunter for Eric. This is complicating, considering Eric has trouble remembering how and when to train him. Hunter is eager to learn, and he wants to help Daddy as much as he possibly can, but I'm afraid we are too late in the game for that. At Eric's pace, he would have Hunter's training completed in at least a year if not longer, which would put Hunter at an age that wouldn't be healthy for him. Eric needs assistance with bracing incase he falls and needs help. Or if he is down and needed to be pulled to safety. I wish we could have began training Hunter for this at an earlier age. I feel if he was trained as a puppy, then he would have made more progress at a faster rate.
I was wondering if you had any older puppies that would be on the large end of the NAID spectrum that you think would be good for Service Dog work? Eric is 6'3 and weighs roughly 280lbs. I have heard amazing things about your Shalom Shepherds. I have also thought about blogging and promoting the NAID breed as I am a huge advocate for them! I love these dogs so much <3 I have been able to find a lot of Hunter's extended family!! It has been wonderful.
If we were able to get a puppy from you, I would blog the training progress and establish a large following of people. I feel that the NAID is the perfect dog for veterans, either for companionship or service work. When Eric is doing public access with Hunter, people always want to ask him about his dog. It forces him to interact with people, which is difficult for Eric, but perfect for what he needs help with the most!
Sorry for the long email but I wanted to contact you and also say hey! :)

HellOur sweet girl, Kirbie our Shalom Shepherd from Shasta and Chevyo's 2/22 litter. She just weighed in at 20 pounds at her 11 week vet visit. We are enjoying her so much and love watching her grow! She has a great demeanor and loves to play and fetch. We get compliments and inquiries whenever someone meets her for the first time. Most people have never heard of an NAID, so we love to educate them! Just wanted to send you an update on the sweet girl we adopted from you! Thank you, Karen!
o, Karen,
Our pup, Armin, from the Dec. 24, 2015 NAS litter, is doing great! He's proven to be an excellent psychiatric service dog for me. He is reliably alerting to panic attacks, interrupts flashbacks, crying, and self harming behaviors (which I've now been able to eliminate), gives anxiety alerts to 3 signals to allow me to take measures to prevent a full blown panic attack, gives me deep pressure therapy, and blocks, preventing other people from getting too close to me when I'm in crowded places. Armin can sense when I'm feeling fearful and will keep watch right outside whatever room I'm in until I feel safe. He's amazing and really enthusiastic about learning more tasks.
I made the decision to owner train him for this job and it's been such a wonderful experience for me. He lives for training!! I never even had to teach him any of the interruption tasks; he understood those from day 1. His public access training is going very well too. He's been polite and well behaved in stores and other places for a few months now and is totally reliable off leash. He recently had his first outing with me in a sit down restaurant and he was perfect. I'm indescribably grateful for this dog!!
I went from never leaving my house to being able to hold a full time job and lead a happy life. :) I'm so excited to see what the future holds and feel optimistic about completely overcoming the hold PTSD had on my life.
All the Best,
Britt & Armin
Hi Karen,
I just wanted to say thank you again for the wonderful little boy you gave me. He has adjusted to home wonderfully! He is so sweet and so incredibly smart! I have had him for 10 days now and he already is potty trained, knows how to sit, lay down, come and stay! My vet says he is a healthy, vibrant little boy and is excited to learn more about the Shalom Shepherd breed. I have attached some pictures to show how much he has grown in 10 days! Again, I just wanted to reach out and say thank you so much for this wonderful little guy!
Thanks,
Jordan Henderson
Hello Karen,
Well it has been a week with Gander (what I named him). son of M.V.'S TESUVA & M.V.;S WO TONKA (ST.JOHN'S INDIAN DOG male) He is the sweetest pup I have ever come in contact with. I have rescued and fosters many puppies and litters alike, and his deposition is the calmest and well mannered. I keep saying the Puppy God's have blessed me because I have never had a puppy with this nature.
Him and Cessna are just now starting to play which is great. While playing last night Gander's ears have popped up and are now up for good. I was unsure if this was going to happen with the Newfie in him, but they have and shockingly very early. The short video in this email shows them up now.
He is doing so well, still lots of sleeping. However, he is sleeping through the night with no accidents which is awesome. He is going to be an amazing doing. If his disposition continues I will more than likely train him for a therapy dog. Still a little early to tell, especially if he picks up on any of Cessna's bad behaviors.
I am getting many comments and many that have NAIDS that have fallen in love. I would imagine if you had another litter they would go pretty quick as well. I also have family and couple friends that would consider since he demeanor is amazing.
Hope all is well, enjoy the pictures.
Laura, Gander and Cessna
Hi Karen,
Just wanted to let you know the puppy(male #7 the pure white one from Wakan Hota and Lakota) is doing great and thriving! He is amazingly intelligent for his age! He hasn’t had one accident in the house and goes potty outside on command. He’s been incorporated into our pack consisting of a German Shepherd and a Great Pyrenees without any difficulty whatsoever. Wanted to thank you again. Your dogs are amazing! Will consider another in the future. Take care,
Hi karen,
This is Mara and Jason we wanted to let you know that our little male (makya lee) from wakan hota and Lakota is doing awesome he is 14 wks old today. He is spoiled rotten currently up to date on all his shots and the vet has given him a clean bill of health. He really completes our family. He is such a joy to have around. Makya is a great dog and no one in the family is allergic Hurrah!!
Hi Karen,
I thought I would drop you a note to say hello, hope you are doing well, and sending good wishes for the holidays and new year. I am living in the Chesapeake Bay are of Maryland now, but visit Margot and her furry friends often (Fang and Tank).
Since seeing you last, I completed a year course for veterinarian assistant certification. I enjoyed the class immensely and gained much desired knowledge. I am spending most of my time as a volunteer at the local humane shelter, caring for animals and raising money.
I am enclosing some recent pics of Catori - my God given companion - for your enjoyment. I don’t know what I would do without him! I know, for sure, he gives me more joy than I could have ever imagined!
Thanks again for your hospitality when we stopped by two years ago (wow time flies),
Still,
Carol
Hi Karen!
Realized I hadn’t sent you any pictures of Ollie who was born out of the litter between Inky and Nanuq. He is now almost 8 months old and he is the best thing to happen to me! He is always so full of energy, but is the first one at night to jump up and hog the bed! He absolutely loves going to doggie daycare and apparently even has a girlfriend (golden puppy). He has the best temperament of any dog I have ever had. I was nervous around Christmas for him to be around my little cousins because he is so high energy but he truly amazed me when he didn’t try and jump on any of them and did nothing but lick them while they pulled and poked at him! I always get so many compliments on both his physical appearance and what a great personality he has. I couldn’t imagine my life without him now!

We would also like to share with you how much we love Rollo, our 2 year old NAID (Boyaca and Shaloam) that we purchased in March of 2015. He has grown into a stunning animal. I cannot go anywhere without people approaching us to comment on his beauty and calm behavior. He is so smart and funny and well-behaved. He is the perfect dog. As my wife mentioned, our other dog died last August and we think Rollo would enjoy a companion who is more his speed. We fell in love with that grey puppy from Yahu & Ottawa, so here we go again!
Here are a few pictures of Rollo as an adult. Thanks for breeding these extraordinary creatures. We don’t really think of Rollo as a dog. He is more of a mythical beast that chooses to live with us. He is wonderful.
Sincerely,
James
Thought you would appreciate this picture of this beauty. Arwen from the Dec 24 Amber litter of NAS. She is 90 pounds! Most loving dog ever. Perfect dog. Vickie
Hi Karen!
Hope this e-mail finds you well! Just wanted to give you an update on our beautiful boy NAID from the Ottawa/Bracha litter and his first week in his new loving home. We named him Baloo considering his happy-go-lucky attitude and stunning blue eyes. He has been adjusting wonderfully to his new life out here in California and has brought so much joy to the family. Really good for the soul! What a handsome and intelligent goof-ball he is! When he is all rambunctious he can be an adorable little devil, and when all tuckered out, he’s the sweetest little angel. Truly love him, he makes the heart melt. Super friendly and sociable with all kinds of people and our neighbor doggies. Expectedly, been getting so many compliments on how sweet he is, and a lot of intrigue into his breed, to which I forward your contact info. It is a blessing that I am able to work from home, so he has bonded tremendously to become my little shadow. He’s learning more and more everyday and adjusting comfortably to the active city life. He loves sitting the backyard vine patch and enjoys the comfort and freedom in his new home. Our vet was very impressed with how docile he was at his check-up. And our trainer is enamored with him, looking forward to working with us in the coming weeks. My mom is absolutely head-over-heels for him as well. She has waited decades for a dog, so to see how happy she is with him, is particularly special for me. Just wanted to thank you again for bringing him into our lives and the wonderful work you do with your dogs. Definitely considering getting another pup from you a few years down the line. We will stay in contact and give you some updates on lil’ Baloo bear in the coming months.
Thanks again!
God bless,
MARK
Hello Karen,
I wanted to give you an update on how well Neela is doing! The blue eyed female from Bracha and Ottawa. We could not be happier with her, she is such a sweet, loving little girl. She has adjusted so well into our family and has meet so many new friends, fellow dogs and humans. She is the talk of the neighborhood and every time we meet someone new they have already heard about the gorgeous Neela. In addition to how beautiful and sweet she is she is also very smart! She has already learned what NO means and does not beg while we are eating, she lays sweetly at our feet until we are done. She loves to play with her toys and cuddle with us. She has already bonded with us so much and will always make sure she has us in her sights. She loves to lay on the bathroom floor while I get ready in the mornings. She is great on the leash already! She comes when asked, walks by myside (not in front or behind), and stops to wait when crossing the street until I tell her it is safe to go. She has brought so much joy to our family. It has been very somber in our household ever since my boyfriend’s father passed away in March but ever since Neela came to live with us my boyfriend’s emotional state has done a 180.. I have never seen him so happy. Neela is truly a God send. It has been a pleasure dealing with you as well Karen, you made this whole process very easy and pleasant. You were available to talk when I had questions and were very helpful. I thank you for everything and would recommend you to anyone!
Karen,
Hi Karen,
Sharon and I may be looking to get a friend for Kaiyeh (One of Fred and Tate’s) she is doing well as she approaches her 10th birthday. She topped out around 90 pounds and has maintained that for several years.
I was wondering if any of Fred and Tate’s line were in your breeding program. All your dogs are beautiful, but I have a soft spot for Fred in particular. I was wondering if you would have anyone available that might look like the pictures I’ve included (not that it matters too much).
Just wanted to share a quick story from this past summer. We are fortunate enough to have a cottage on an island and don’t expect Kaiyeh to get into too many shenanigans when we are up there, but this year, the day before returning home for the new school year, Kaiyeh met a porcupine for the first time (how or why it came to our island is a mystery). She didn’t get hit too bad, but did manage to get about thirty or so quills in her muzzle and lower jaw. We were at a bit of a loss, as it needed to be taken care of quickly, but it was a Sunday in the country which made the situation more difficult.
Luckily the neighbor on the next island is an emergency care doctor……so we had to get ahold of her, and keep her steady as the quills were removed. Long story short, we’re not small people and it took myself, Sharon, my Niece and my brother to keep her steady while Bob pulled the quills. It was not a fun experience for any of us, but have to say that she never even nipped, growled, or at Bob, just at the pliers, and when we figured that out, we gave her another pair of pliers to chew on while Bob quickly cleared out the remaining quills. She even approached Bob directly after the whole ordeal in what I can only describe as a gesture of thanks before disappearing to one of her under-cottage dens to nurse her wounds for the next 12 hours or so. We found a stray quill a couple of days later, but she recovered quickly and was back to her old self.
There’s a new face on the Emory campus—and this one has fur.
The University’s first full-time therapy dog joined the office of Counseling and Psychological Services in September. Beowulf, a Native American Indian dog / Golden Retriever just over a year old, already has become a welcome sight for students and faculty as she explores her new home—wearing her vest that says she’s a therapy dog in training and her Emory ID.
Beowulf is generally in the company of Colleen Duffy, a staff psychologist, who is in charge of caring for the dog. The two hold appointments with students, attend meetings, and take regular walks, stopping often to greet and socialize.
The dog’s working day “depends on what my client load looks like,” says Duffy. “She may greet the clients, sit in her place next to my chair, sit at their feet, or they may pet her. That is something that can be incredibly comforting."
Karen,
Apache is amazing and doing really well. He is the son of M.V.'s Lowaci (NAID) and M.V.'s Onaway(NAID) He's 68 pounds at 6th months. He loves other dogs and they love him. He is so kind to the little dogs. He lays down and puts his ears back so they are not scared by his size. He is amazing with my 9 and 6 year olds. All of my neighbors are obsessed with him. Thanks again for such a wonderful companion. Brian
Dear Karen,
Just wanted to share with you some news about Tango & Cha-Cha. In preparation for teeth cleaning, we had them go full physical, blood test, EKG and the works. The results have amazed us, although we were not surprised... The Vet concluded, based on the tests, Tango has a physique of a three (3) years old and Cha-Cha a physique of a four (4) years old. They possess very good genes. We were not surprise because even though they will be 11 in November, they don’t look or behave their age. The are really amazing!
Have a great 4th and may God continue to guard and bless America. We need it with so many enemies within and abroad.

Hi Karen! Just wanted to give you an update on my Sibercaan:) Hondo just turned 10 years old and everyone at the vets office just loves him! We went in to get hus nails clipped and the groomer kept hugging him and calling him handsome. She couldnt believe he was 10! She says his teeth, coat, and eyes are that of a 2-3 year old! There were a couple of young boys that came into the office and begged mom to let them pet Hondo. Hondo was so excited that he slobbered them with kisses and couldnt wag his tail enough! The boys just loved him! Hondo is excellent with children! He adores my grand daughters and he is very excited to meet our newest grand daughter! How do i know this you may ask? Because his tail wags, his eyes light up, and he slobbers me with kisses when i show him the baby picture! He is awesome! Can't thank you enough for my beautiful fur baby!!
Karen,
I just wanted to give you an update on Odin. We took Odin home March 12th 2016. He was Born in January 2016.
Odin is an amazingly well tempered and happy puppy, He loves children and all dogs/Cats large or small. It has been a Joy to seem him grow up and develop a personality. We treat him and our other dog like children they go everywhere with us i cant image our life without him in it now. You remember that at 8 weeks of age, he had a heart murmur and at 12 weeks of age, just like you said, it was gone. There is still no sign of his heart murmur, he is now 70 pounds at 5 and 1/2 months old. No wonder it took his heart a bit to catch up with his body. He is going to be a big boy!

Hi Karen,
I just wanted to say thank you again for the wonderful little boy you gave me.
Hi Karen,
First of all, I want to tell you that I purchased a 2yr. old Akita female from a family, who was supposed to have been great with children and with a wonderful demeanor. However, as soon as i got her home and my 8 month old son tired to roll over on the carpet next to her, she still growling and barring her fangs at my son. I guess i freaked out and called my father to come and get the dog because i was so afraid my son would be bitten. My Dad came over and took the Akita home with him. He had her on a tie out cable, so she had lots of space to roam around. She got tangled and my dad went out to untangle her and she bit my Dad , pretty badly too. So obviously i was afraid to continue my search for any dog breed.
Then i hear about the Native American Indian Dog!!! Both myself and my husband and my son are part Native American, so i thought I would take a chance! After meeting you and all your wonderful dogs, in their spacious enclosures, we took home Loki a 1 yr old spayed female that had been returned to you, last fall. I knew she had no experience with young children or farm life and livestock, but figured hey, it's worth a try. Got Loki home, lead her into the house and she acted like she had been there her whole life. My son is in the "attempting to crawl and get around stage, and get into everything phase and i watched him heading for the electric cord and electrical outlet. To my utter disbelief and amazement, Loki was watching too, and crawled on her belly, trying to imitate my son, passed him, and lied between my son and the electric outlet. My son made it to Loki, and grabbed on to her with two fistfuls of her hair and attempted to crawl up her back, she wagged her tail and started him licking him in the face, which plopped him back down on his belly. He then saw her tail wagging, so he grabbed it, stuck it in his mouth and bit down. She got up, turned around, licked him in the face and in his ear, until he let go, then she plopped down between the wall and my son again. A few minutes later my son headed for the stairway, of which i had a children's gate across it, but Loki saw it, immediately got up and placed herself between the gate and my son. My husband could hardly believe the events that had unfolded while he was away at work..
Every Sunday after church is over we go to my in laws for Sunday dinner. After having Loki for only a week, everyone at church wanted to meet our new NAID child protector. So we loaded Loki up in the car with us and took her to church for everyone to meet her. They were all amazed at how friendly and outgoing she is and that she is hypoallergenic as well. A few dog timid, allergy sufferers, actually got brave enough to come up and pet her on the head! A few minutes later after suffering no symptoms, they were actually hugging her. I know of a few people who want to get a pup from you now for sure!!
While we were sitting around the kitchen table enjoying our Sunday feast, Loki started to whine and cry and pace the kitchen. We thought maybe she had to go to the bathroom, but no one got up from the table to let her out. Then she went bonkers, starting to climb the walls, almost ripping down the curtains on the windows, trying to get outside. Wow! we all thought, she must really have to go! I opened the door and let her out, hoping she wouldn't take off and head for home, and get hit by a car. I few minutes latter, we all thought we heard the bleating of sheep!! We ran to the door and to the windows and gawked with open mouths at what was taking place outside in the back yard.
Here stands Loki guarding a dozen or more sheep pinned in the corner of the back yard, staring and growling at 3 silhouettes, coyote shaped, slinking behind the shrubbery in the back yard.
Karen, of Majestic View Kennels had told me that NAIDs were NOT herding dogs, but Loki is!! Apparently the coyotes had entered the sheep enclosure and proceeded to have lamb on the hoof for lunch, and the sheep terrified, either jumped the fence, or found away to go under or through the fencing and get out. Loki had sensed, smelled, or heard the coyotes and knew the sheep were in danger, just like she instinctively knew it about my son. Never being around any livestock before, how in the world did she know what to do? Needless to say, my Father-in-law Loves Loki for sure now.
It is the darndest thing, Loki loves my paint horse, and leads him by the lead rope, all over the place. My horse loves her as well, he follows her everywhere and they want to be stall buddies, but I need Loki in the house to babysit for me!! lol!
Just wanted you to know what an incredible dog Loki is! She was meant to hang out with her new found Native American family. I guess my ancestors really did have incredible dogs. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you for Loki and for the joy, love and protection she has provided for me and my family.
Hi KAREN, Harley and Jax, Shalom Shepherds, from M.V.'s Oshanna & M.V's Inmutanka Tu just had their 6 month checkup and are doing great. They are some big boys. Jax, sitting in the chair, weighed in at 81lbs. Harley is a very healthy 95lbs. They truly love "love". Not a mean or aggressive bone in their body. Thanks again for a wonderful breed. Hi Karen,
I wanted to give you an update on our puppy, Armin. This dog keeps amazing me. After we picked him up last week, he immediately sensed that I'm his main person and bonded very strongly to me. He was already house broken when we got him, already knows heel, sit, come, and is trustworthy off leash after only having him for 5 days!!!!! He never had an accident during our 7 hour drive from Michigan and sleeps in the car. He is fabulous with my 18 yr old cat, all other cats and dogs he's met ( he's met a lot, as everyone I know has cats and we live by a dog park) and even my guinea pigs. I have no doubt that he's cut out for psychiatric service work with me because he's got a calm temperament and looks to me first anytime we are in a new situation before reacting. He's unbelievably smart! Yesterday I started weaning off a very addictive antidepressant because I'm ready for life without feeling numb anymore--a huge step! I was very sick when I woke up today and he stayed beside me for 3 hours and gently nudged my hands until I was able to get out of bed and go outside with him, something I'd never have done alone. Going outside is the absolute best and hardest thing to do when you're sick and depressed and I felt much better afterward. I've been more active these past few days than I have been in 3 years. I don't have to fear losing my career now that I have this little guy to help me regulate my self care and help me with getting up when I'm sick or have horrible nightmares that make me feel out of touch with reality. I typically am very scared to go I public because it's a trigger for my PTSD but with Armin I feel safe because he lets me know if someone is trustworthy or not. I'm only 25 but I've felt like I've been living in a hole for years because of mental illness. I honestly feel like Armin is giving me my life back. No panic attacks since I've had him. When he senses I'm upset he comes to me and lays his head on me or just gets this big goofy smile and paws at me. He's a fluffy angel and Trevor and I adore him. Today Armin showed me that his strength is in healing just like his grandfather Uniquely Blue. After work I came home feeling ill and in pain from the medicine again. I layed down with Armin and felt a cold wash of air come over me (Trevs also felt it) and my stomach calmed down immediately and my body pain dissipated within a few minutes. Amazing magic your dogs have. You are very right about them being psychic. I'm a medium and saw lots of kind spirits around Majestic View. I suspect you already know this and that's why you make such beautiful gemstone collars to help enhance their abilities. I also work with gemstones and chose Armin's onyx and agate one so that when he's big enough to wear it, it will be both protective and help him direct his healing where it needs to go. What made me need to reach out and let you know about him today was the fact that in addition to all this I think he's been trying to tell us that my guinea pig was sick with cancer. When I first brought him home he was really interested in my male piggy, Pocky, and would lay in front of his cage everyday and touch noses. He sometimes pawed at my pig and I was worried he wanted to play with him or that he just liked him because they both love other animals. He would paw at the cage so I worried he might unintentionally hurt my pig and decided to wait to introduce them out of the cage till later. Tonight Armin woke me up at 3am and actually pooped in front of Pocky's cage which is unusual because the dog goes poop outside consistently now. I found my piggy had died when I was sleeping and we realized when we examined him that he must've had cancer in his belly that we were unable to see or feel last week before we went to Michigan...it was in the end stages so it spread fast. I think Armin had been trying to alert us to this but I mistook it for regular puppy interest in the guineas. He never showed any indication of violence towards them and now after he woke me I think he was trying to help. I'm just in awe and so incredibly grateful that God brought you and your magical dogs into my life. The moment he ran up to me on Saturday I felt like he knew we were going to work together. Visiting was a great experience for us and next time we are in Michigan to visit Trevor's family, we would love to stop by with Armin again. Thank you so much for everything and I will be in touch with you for sure. ❤
Feel free to share anything you like on your site. Sending lots of love to you and your doggies.
Best,
Britt, Trevor, Armin, Alice, Nutkin, and Pocky in heaven
ubj Update!
Hi Karen
I can't tell you how much we love him!! He is so smart and learned "sit" literally in just minutes. In just a week he has opened up and become such a huge part of our little family. He and Ryker are the best of friends. Even my cats like him! He's very gentle and respectful of them! He's such an angel and has such a sweetness about him. It's amazing to witness given that he is only 10 weeks old. I look forward to our future with him. I can't tell you how blessed we feel to have this breed back in our lives.

Hey Karen!
Loki has been with us for 3 weeks now and he is everything I imagined he would be and more! He now weighs about 20 pounds and continues to grow and change every minute. I want to thank you for giving me the joy to raise such a sweet and well-tempered puppy. He brings so much joy and love into our lives. He is also not afraid of anything, which is amazing! I brought out the vacuum cleaner the other day and he just stepped aside and allowed me to do my cleaning. He truly is the smartest breed I have ever encountered. He learned how to sit, shake, and lay down as if he has been doing it his whole life. He has the biggest personality and is stealing everyone's hearts. Thank you again.
-Aarti
Karen
Gunnar is almost 6 months old ( from Inmutankatu & Aliyah) and doing fantastic. He passed puppy training with flying colors. He is very social with people and animals. We couldn't imagine our lives without him in it.
I was at the vet today and the receptionist said they had another NAID puppy recently. I asks who the breeder was and sure enough it's one of yours. He's roughly 10 weeks old now. The word is out how wonderful your dogs are. We feel truly blessed.
Hope all is well.
Hey Karen! We have loved every second with this guy. He grows and learns something everyday. He's mature, loving, and enjoys greeting new faces (dog & human). He's catching on to potty training pretty well! He sleeps under our bed every night and will wake me up if he needs to go outside. He LOVES to play in mud. He has his wild and crazy moments and they are hilarious! He's had all his shots and is a very healthy boy! He weighs 32 pounds now! He is looking so much like Uniquely Blue! Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving us our perfect boy.
Here are some recent photos :)
HI KAREN,
I took some new photos of Kota (NAS Baltic Amber and Shaloam) this afternoon while I was out working on the yard, in between play time of course. I can't believe how much she's changed in the past 2 months. She gets more beautiful each day.
Last week we were walking and ran into some young teens playing soccer. She joined in the game and shoved the ball up and down the street with her nose and paws keeping total control of the ball. Guess she'll be needing her own soccer ball next time I go to the store.
At the dog park last week, someone brought their miniature chihuahua into the big dog side. Kota spotted it and came flying across the park full speed at it. She slid to a halt, dropped to the ground and rolled onto her back so she could kiss the chihuahua in the face. She was so gentle with it, everyone was in awe.
On Friday, we were out walking in our neighborhood when a lady came running out of her house calling to us. She wanted to know if my dog was Kota, she had heard about her from her neighbors. The lady has a dear friend who is going to have to retire her service dog and was looking for a new dog to train. She thought a dog like Kota would be a perfect fit for her friend. I did leave her with your contact information.
Kota is now 14 months old and just gets better and better with each passing week. I've never had a dog as smart as she is. There are times she seems almost human.
We look forward to our journey with this special dog every day and can't wait to see where it will take us.

Good morning Karen,
Just checking in and wanted you to know all about Arwen!! She is the most perfect puppy ever. And we always have thought our NAID boy, Joba was the best ( which is why we wanted another), but this one is learning ever faster!! She has adjusted beautifully to our family and her new home. Immediately! She walked right in with confidence and made herself at home as if she has been here and one of us forever! We treat our dogs as our kids, so they are with us always. Arwen bonded with us and our 7 year old NAID boy instantly. She found her place and figured out the house rules within one day. We can't even believe it. She has had not one accident since she has been here. She goes up to our sliding glass doors (we have these in several rooms) and taps on the glass and then goes out to potty. Even at night. she was housebroken from the moment we got her. We were certainly not expecting that, it really seems too good to be true. we didn't even train her, she figured it out herself. She is that smart! Plus, we have a 6 year olld daughter, Leia, who is smothering her with love. Arwen is just accepting being swaddled in a blanket like a baby and appears to be eating up all the attention. She could not be a more perfect dog. First try, she took to the leash and harness, and walked around our neighborhood which is 1/2 mile. She got lots of attention. Everyone wants to know about her and where we got her. Thanks again so much. We are so happy. She is the best baby. We are so in love. If we had the room, I would definitely take another pup from you! Maybe in a few years...Vickie
Good morning Karen. So we have had this beautiful little girl for one week. Just wanted to give you an update on her progress. We love her so much. She is just perfect in every way. Adjusting beautifully and learning so quickly. amusing dynamics between Arwen and Joba dog. Arwen seems to be the Alpha! I would never have thought it! We kept telling our dog that he was the chief Indian dog (literally) and she was going to be his little Indian to take care of. But she came here with so much confidence, she is clearly running the show and it is clear she is the Alp[ha. He is sitting back watching and giving her all his toys, trampoline, and even his food. He is just apparently happily relinquishing the head role to her. He has actually never been happier. He sometimes used to pout if we left him even for a few hours. Or if we work from home, and couldn't give him our undivided attention. He went into clear pout mode until he was walked or played with for hours. He is kind of demanding. You know how NAIDS can be. It is all good and we are happy and able to give him that level of attention. But ever since we got Arwen, he has not pouted once. He is wagging his tail and smiling constantly. We are so happy we got her. The funniest thing happened. First night she was here I put her bed beside me in our bedroom. Joba's bed is on Ken's side of the bed so he can reach out and touch him in the night. By day 3 Arwen had dragged her huge bed across the room and put it by his! Hysterical. and this morning we awoke to her inching her way on his bed with him! I wish I was quick enough to get a picture, but she is s
Hi Karen,
I bought a beautiful NAID puppy, Cortana, from you in November of 2010. She has been an amazing companion to myself and my family. Well mannered and gentle, she is great with my 4 children, Yorkshire terrier, boxer mix, and siamese cat. Not only that, but I cannot take her anywhere without people stopping and asking what kind of dog she is and where she is from. We could not be happier with this dog and as beautiful as she is, thought you may want some pictures of her to display as a past adoption.
Thank you so much for redeveloping this breed and sharing it with the world.
Sincerely,
Rob

i Karen,
I wanted to give an update and testimonial of Riley, a Native American Shepherd from M.V.'s Uniquely Blue & M.V.'s Olathe (6 months old now).
She is very smart and learns things easily. Within 3 days she was appropriately using her potty pads most of the time. She uses a bell by the door to tell us when she wants to be outside. She has passed her puppy class learning the commands quickly.
Riley is really great with the kids, even my 1 year old! We did have to do some training with her regarding the baby but she learned quickly and they are best buds! She tolerates him climbing all over her.
She is growing really fast and is very active. One must be prepared for a BIG PUPPY (who is still learning) and yes can reach the pie on your counter. She is growing so fast she sometimes seems awkward and clumsy.
Riley gets along great with the other dogs. She is now in doggy daycare 2-3 days a week which she loves. She loves the water, jumping in and out of pools or running in the lake. She is a good swimmer. She prefers cooler weather as she wants to be inside when it's hot but now that the weather has cooled a bit she is preferring the outdoors more and more.
She is very friendly and sweet. She gives hugs wrapping her front paws around your leg or waist and resting her head on you. She rarely barks (I think I have heard her bark 1x). Riley has never made any intimidating noises or gestures at strangers and is very welcoming to guests that come over to our house (she would not make a good guard dog..lol).
The whole family loves her so much, she is a great pet and everyone who meets her falls in love with her. I have even had stranger ask if they could take a picture of her!
Thank you, I will try to send more pictures as she grows up. Always great talking to you.
Lindsay
Here is our goofy and extremely loveable pup! He is mister social with other dogs, loves to play and is growing up so fast!Hope you enjoy the pictures.
Take care,
Erin
Hi Karen
Meeko is a great dog! He is the most popular guy in our neighborhood, he knows more of our neighbors than we do. There are two daycares in our neighborhood and all the kids line up along our fencing yelling "Meeko." He is a sweet dog that makes us laugh, has been easy to train and is great to have around our whole family. He loves going up to the Boundary Waters with us, barreling back and forth on the portages, and sleeping in the canoe. He never barks. He just loves meeting new people, playing with other dogs and eating!
Thank you! Sibby
Hi Karen...
Just wanted to send you an update. Apollo is 7 months old now...And My family adores him. My daughter who has asthma has no allergic reaction to Apollo at all. He gets along perfectly with our other 3 dogs, he is very gentle and very intelligent!! He is already trained to go outside and does a few tricks as well. He is such a kind and gentle dog. Thank you for giving us our newest puppy who has quickly become a very important part of our family!!

Hi,
I just wanted to say that I appreciate your interest in native american dogs. I am a full blooded Lakota from the Rosebud res. in SD, living in Denver.
We used to have dogs like the ones shown on your web site when I was a child. Most were just around and were great pets and huniting dogs. I always wondered as an adult what kind of dogs they really were. Guess I was influenced by the european breeds some people had and just labled them as muts.
Now as an adult raising pure bred dogs. I have looked for the old 'rez dogs' I grew up with but have found most have been interbred with various other breeds. Thank you for your dedication and loyalty to keep my beloved "rez dog" alive. I hope to have another such dog sometime in the near future. Perhaps one from one of your future litters.
Thank you,
Shunkmanitotanka Cikala
Hi Karen Hope all is well! Just wanted to send you another update on Maska son of Hidatsa Bobtail and Ohapi Wagmu. Maska as you know is turning 14 months on Thursday like his sister and brother Hakata WE2 and Nanuq, and is doing very well he is a lean 57 pounds and on a raw homemade diet with the odd kibble if he needs it (Canine Caviar)and loves the outdoors. He is a delight to have around I am always asked what he is and where did I receive him from and as always I'm always proud to say Majestic View Kennels. Maska’s temperament is very passive and friendly with just the right amount of spunk. Thank you again I always tell people how impressed I was with your facility, very professional, and how lovely the dogs are. I appreciated your knowledge on dogs and hope to one day receive another pup from when I am prepared to do so. sincerely Jonathan of Ontario Canada
Dear Karen, Another year has passed and another set of photos to commemorate their birthdays. Tango turned 8 on November 7 and Cha Cha will celebrate her 8th birthday on the 30th. Attached please find 9 photos we took today. They look magnificent and behave accordingly. They still turn heads of dog lovers and people stop to talk. They feel great and looking at them, we cannot believe it’s been 8 years since we drove to Lowell. As usual, they get steak dinner on every birthday and they love it.Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.God bless,Ilana & Aaron
Hi Karen,
I can’t begin to tell you how much we LOVE Keomi. She is the most awesome dog in the world! We keep thinking about getting her a partner and have thought about a rescue dog. I know this sounds vain, but any other breed just can’t hold up to Keomi’s beauty and grace. I was talking with a sales rep from Blue Buffalo in the pet store a while back and she’d never seen a dog like her before. She agreed with me…walking two NAIDs down the street would just be waaaaay too cool! Despite the fact that Keomi is pushing 100lbs, she doesn’t take up that much space.
Right now, with our 4 cats whom she loves and gets along with great, we want to wait until Buttons, our oldest cat, who is 18 and in frail health, passes before bringing in another family member. We’ve been taking Keomi to dog camp once a week just so she can play with other dogs her size and get out excess energy. She really needs some company but I also think that she enjoys being #1 dog J
So, I’m asking…1. Would you recommend a male or female NAID as a partner? 2. How far in advance should we get put on a list for another puppy? 3. Will Meo Quanee and Hidatsa Bobtail have another liter again (they’re Keomi’s parents and we couldn’t have asked for a better temperament, good looking dog than what we have now).
Looking forward to hearing back from you. I’ll send you some recent pics if you’d like. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Best Regards,

Hi,
I just wanted to say that I appreciate your interest in native american dogs.
Karen,
Otto our new Golden Indian Dog puppy from Goldie & Catori has been such a wonderful boy! When we were traveling he was so calm and friendly people asked us if we had given him a sedative. He was a pro on both plane rides and never peed in his carrier. In fact, within 10 minutes of leaving your house he let us know he needed to go and we pulled over and he went no problem!
Now that we're home he's settling in so well... He whines when he needs to go out and already is great at retrieving a tennis ball. Yesterday he spent the day playing outside, running and rolling around and sleeping on his new bed. He has also had lots of visitors and is super receptive to being held and cuddled by new people. When we eat dinner he sits calmly on his bed near the table and has no food aggression (!!). I'm attaching a picture of him sleeping yesterday morning after his morning play time.
Thanks again for our sweet boy,
Anna & Josh
I wanted to thank you for your warmth welcoming to my family and I.
We made it home ok and our baby girl "Osa" (female bear in Spanish) is doing great. She did great at the hotel where we spent the night last night. She's doing awesome on the leash and very good at going potty and only 8 weeks of age! My boys don't stop talking about our trip, you and all of your amazing dogs.
I have a few questions and hope you don't mind a lil help. We noticed she had fun biting cables, chair legs our shoes, jeans at the hotel room so we had to dog proof the room lol got her a couple of toys which helped her. What else could she play with that won't harm her? Could it be wood? Hard plastic? How often could we give her the raw meat/bones? Which store could we buy more of the food that we got from you?
We made a quick stop at the outlets in PA and Osa caught everybody's attention. My kids are so proud of her breed heritage, the Native American Shepherd, and speak about it with pride. Joe and I are extremely satisfied with your service and professionalism we wish to come back soon!!!!
Hope to hear from you soon! Laura
Hi Karen,
This is Kami, my husband and I recently purchased a female NAID from Oshanna and Tuwaci from you in Sept. Her name is Mika. We just wanted to tell you that we love her so much and she really loves our one yr old NAID male we got one yr ago from you named "Chief". They are inseparable! They are the best dogs ever!. They have such GREAT temperaments and Best of all my Husband has had NO allergic reactions! Even with both of them being inside! We just love them so much and wanted to tell you thanks again! God Bless!
HI KAREN,
I HAD TO SHARE THIS PHOTO WITH YOU. MEEKO IS BECOMING A GREAT SKIJORING DOG! HERE HE IS PICTURED PULLING MY NIECE ON A SLED. BOTH ARE OBVIOUSLY HAVING A GREAT TIME!
Hi Karen,
Hope all is well at Majestic View Kennels and you're hanging in there up in the cold. You are such an amazing lady to be able to do that all on your own!
Otto turns 4 months tomorrow and boy, has he grown! He's over 20lbs now and just such a cutie. Our vet allows us to go to a couple of safe spots (he gets his last shots tomorrow) and people just go crazy over him.
We've given your name and information to a lot of people out here. Everyone seems to have a "oodle" mix in California because of allergies and they are shocked to see they are not allergic to Otto. Everyone out here wants to know where they can get a dog like him!
Josh and I are looking at moving up to wine country and buying a property with some land. I think Otto will love having even more space to run and play.
People love the fact that he is half retriever but only sheds once a year... . I know the asking price around here for a Golden Retriever is at least $1500, and a poodle mix up to $2500. I know it's crazy, but should you ever consider it let us know- we'd love to help!
Regardless, we'd love to get Otto a sister pup in a year or so after he's neutered, so we'll definitely be making our way back to Majestic View Kennels! Are you planning another litter of GIDs anytime soon? Here's a current picture our our boy with his best friend, our neighbor's golden retriever. Otto loves him so much he can't resist climbing onto his bed and trying to give him kisses-it's so fun to see!!
Happy new year!
Anna
Hi Karen,
We all made it back to Vermont safe and sound. We did not have any trouble at the border either. I just wanted to send you a quick update on Yogi Bear our new acquired six month old Native American Shepherd from Ogala & Sunkissed Raven. He is doing really well and getting used to all the new things in his life, like the indoors, walking on a leash, and getting along with our other pup.
Here are a couple photos of him. We are borrowing Loki (the husky), another dog in the family to help us out with Yogi. He is definitely Yogi's best friend right now!
Thank you for making is so easy for us to get this perfect pooch! He is such a love and really completes our family. Your kennel is beautiful and we feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to meet you and all your dogs. We will never forget it and hopefully we will be ready for another dog from you in a few years!
Best of luck throughout the rest of the winter!
Jan, Nathaniel, Yogi, Jackson, and Loki
Hello, Ms. Markel
It is Charles with Thaddeus my St. John's Indian Dog. I love him so much he is the sweetest pup in the world. And I wanted to send you some updated pictures of him at 10 months old. He and I have done so much together. He has been to the beach, hikes numerous mountains with me and goes with me on my daily cross country run. I could not have imagined a dog as wonderful as Thaddeus! And will be looking at the Golden indian dog for a buddy for Thaddeus in the future. Thank you so much for such a wonderful dog!
Sincerely,
Charles
Hi Karen-
I hope all is well with you. I see on your web site you have more puppies. Congratulations!
Yukon my NAID male from Wastena and Bobtail passed the therapy dog class last month. He is so smart and fun to train. He doesn't get spooked easy, and the first time he saw a wheelchair, crutches and a walker in the class he acted like they were no big deal. I was so impressed! I am also impressed by his ease around kids, especially since we don't have any! The socialization you gave him helps.
Hope you had a blessed Easter!
Jenny
WELL, Karen,
Just so you are aware, after coming to your kennels and visiting all your dogs when we came to visit your Golden Retriever female you have up for adoption, we have changed our minds and have totally fallen in love with the NAID and all the designer dog mixes that you are breeding. We would LOVE a female pup from Gold Sovereign & your male Jhonny Boy or any of your females bred by Jhonny Boy. We saw him and honestly I have to say I have never seen such a magnificent Golden Retriever! Only to find out that he is in reality a Golden Indian Dog! Go figure! I did not want to raise and train another puppy , was looking for an adult, but I am now hooked, we want a Golden Indian Dog pup. Where was this breed years ago when the poodle Golden Retriever mix was created? No comparison in the looks or temperament with the Golden Doodle vs. the Golden Indian Dog. We are so excited! Don't know if my heart can hold out for the wait for our newest member of our family! Oh, and how in the world do you do it? So many dogs and such a clean, spacious facility, and all the dogs are so happy looking and acting! Again, thank-you for the tour of your magnificent facility. Anne
Dear Karen,
We are so thankful to have found your kennels on line, advertising the hypoallergenic dogs. Our daughter, whom is highly allergic to dogs, has prevented our family from purchasing a dog. We are not fond of the poodle-mix breeds. Therefore, we had done a lot of research on what other dog breeds were a possibility with our daughter’s allergies. We needed to see for ourselves that your NAID and the other designer NAID mix breeds would not affect our daughter. To our astonishment, even after being licked by every dog possible at your kennel, she had not one allergic reaction. Your dogs have been a great discovery for our family. Owning a dog is a dream that we didn’t think was going to be fulfilled. Thanks to your breeding efforts, the NAID and NAID mix breeds are allowing us to fulfill the dream of having our kids grow up with a dog. We look forward to having one of your hypoallergenic pups as a family member.
Kristen and Brian L.
Hi Karen,
Here are some photos of Catori providing comfort for patients at Lahey Hospital. Because he is hypoallergenic, we are allowed in the hospitals, nursing care facilities and of course veteran rehab facilities where Catori is world renown for his work on a ship on the Atlantic Ocean where surgeons perform reconstructive surgery on wounded soldiers. Catori is 175lbs of love and comfort and joy to all who meet him and it's hard to imagine life without such a blessing. Eternally grateful for your developing of this dog breed. C&J
My husband found out that two people who work in his corporation have NAIDs. One of the guys got his dog from the pound. He was very nervous about what to expect from this relatively unknown breed. After getting a good recommendation from a coworker, who currently owns a NAID, he took the dog home. He and his family are completely in love with this dog. He uses it for a hunting dog. He told my husband that this is the first hunting dog he has ever owned that has been allowed in the house. He said the dog can look so furious when hunting, then come in the house and let his little kids climb all over it. This is hard to believe but he claims that this dog learned a trick from watching it on TV with he and his wife. The dog already knew basic commands and after watching this trick just once on TV, the dog got the first time the man tried it. I don't know about that.....your the expert on this breed. This guy told Brett (my husband) that he will never own a smarter more loyal animal than a NAID. This information just further reiterated how happy we are with our final decision to get one of your puppies.
Thanks,
Carla G.”
“Hello,
My name is Camie and I live in Charlotte , N.C. I was out shopping today and I saw this woman with her dog out in front of Blockbuster. It was the most beautiful dog I had ever seen. So, I just had to stop and ask her about her gorgeous animal. She told me that she was a Native American Indian Dog. She said the dog was two years old and she recommended Majestic View as the breeder of NAIDs to purchase a dog from. We have a 6 year old golden retriever named Buddy, a very sweet dog. About a year ago, we lost our other dog to cancer. It was a very hard time for us all. My husband and I have been talking about getting another dog. We have two children (Cailee 9 and Cameron 6). The lady I met said that this breed is very good with kids.”
“Karen,
I've visited a lot of breeders in Ontario and other provinces, and a few breeders in Ohio who breed all sorts of dogs, from Huskies and Husky mixes, to Australian Shepherds and Collies, and even Dobermans who have outdoor facilities. I don't think I've ever seen an outdoor facility that is kept as nicely, cleanly, and lovingly as yours. It's pretty obvious the amount of money and care that go into these dogs of yours. Just wanted you to know. Thanks S.K.”
“Hello Mrs. Markel! I only recently found out about NAIDs and I'm already in love with them! I've been looking up their history everywhere I possibly can, could probably write a term paper over them! Any who. My great grandmother was a full blood Cherokee and though I never met her as she had passed on long before I came into the world I've always had a strong sense of Native American Pride and an enthusiasm for learning all that I can about my heritage and People.
I've been wanting a wolf hybrid for years now, since I was 3 actually, but have never had the right accommodations for them, sadly. Though I used to raise them for a naturalist in my hometown for years, it wasn't the same as having my own for a companion. Then I found the NAID.
I haven't heard much about the dogs before, only bits and pieces but after researching them I see how special they were to my ancestors. I've always felt that modern dog breeds were slightly inferior, I just didn't know what to, and now I do, for the NAID is a wonder upon itself; almost like a dog bred by GOD Himself! How wonderful and amazing is that!! a long living large dog, sheds once a year, hypoallergenic, super intelligent, family oriented, hunters, workers, spiritual companions, what more could anyone ask for?!
Thank you very much for your time. And many thanks for your efforts in bringing the breed back from darkness, they deserve it.
Emily”
Dear Karen
Thank you so much for allowing us to visit your home and beautiful dogs. I think I love every one of them and don't care what color I receive from Rosie's litter. After viewing all them it doesn't matter any more!! HAHA
I was impressed by your care and housing of your animals unlike other kennels with such small areas yours were huge,
and all of the dogs were so content in their environment and extremely friendly. Gaye, Northern Sky Obedience Academy
Karen,
Thanks so much for letting us come and see your dogs. They are wonderful animals, and I can see that you really love them. We really appreciated you opening your home to us and giving us a chance to see why they are such ideal pets. You do a fantastic job with them, and it is easy to see that they care very much for you, too!! Jacinta and Brendon”
“Hi Karen, Just wanted to drop a line to say hello and thank you so very much for spending time with Ilene and I last weekend. Your resort was all I thought it would be and more. Your animals are truly remarkable. You have a class A facility. Just being in your kennels felt like home. I'm glad we waited to meet with you and learn more about your breed. Im also glad ole Whitney took somewhat of a liking to me.
Sincerely,
Michael and Ilene”
Hello,
Tonight, at a car show, in Pittsburgh , Pa , a family drove up with the most beautiful dog I have ever seen. I had to go over to meet him. He was very bright and friendly. I wanted him, but the family wouldn't let him go..:o)
They told me he was a Native American Indian Dog and said they got him from you…
Thanks so much Tom”
Hi... I am a veterinary technician in Corona , California and I got to see one of your beautiful dogs this last weekend at our vaccine clinic. What an absolutely beautiful dog! I never knew they existed and the owner gave me your website to look over. Maybe one day, I can own one of these beautiful creatures....
Tess”
“Hi Karen:
Well here we are sitting in a motel in Indy. Had a rainy trip down and did nothing but talk about your magnificent animals all the way down here.
Karen thank you so much for your hospitality and for sharing a bit of your delightful NAID kingdom with us. Your dogs are truly magnificent and if you would have turned your back Susan would have snatched up all those adorable puppies in a New York minute!
We hope to see you again soon. Thanks again.
Doug”
"Dear Karen,
Thank you so much for everything this weekend! Alex and I had a wonderful time. It was so terrific to meet you and your family. Thank you for making us feel so welcome and for your kind hospitality. Your home is beautiful, the food was delicious, and the dogs were truly amazing!
We can't stop thinking about the dogs and miss them already! Not only are they beautiful and intelligent, but regal as well. "Majestic" is indeed a perfect word to describe them. I was struck by the depth and wisdom in their eyes - I have never witnessed that in a dog before. Ukiahya, Paahuma, and Pasasa, in particular, stole my heart! They are such sweethearts! I was so sad to say goodbye to them.
The puppies were absolutely adorable! We wish we could have taken one home, but we want to be good puppy parents, and get our yard and schedules ready first. We feel really happy about our decision to take two instead of one, so they can have a constant companion and never be lonely. It's going to be hard to wait for our puppies, but we will do our best! Until then, we'll just have to keep visiting your website, and looking at the pictures."
"Hi Karen,
I wanted to say how much I enjoyed getting to visit all your dogs. They are so beautiful and so special, I love them. If you ever need some extra help with all your new puppies I would be happy to come for the day and help you with them."
"Dear Karen, We want to thank you for all your efforts allowing us to get to know each of your Native American Indian Dogs better. As we had driven to Majestic View Kennels early that afternoon, we were anxious to meet the animals to really determine if we would be able to provide them with a lifestyle as comfortable as the one you give them. During our visit, it was clear to us that these dogs, their essence and their uncanny character was what we sought after. We can't wait to receive a new pup shortly!
The interaction we received from all of the NAID family left us with enormous smiles and heartfelt joy to know that such a breed is available to accompany us in our lives. Each dog had it's own trait from a loyal and exciting playfulness to an observant silence. These animals are truly a gift!
Chris and Katie"
"Hi Karen, ...I wanted to thank you again for letting us stay with you and to meet all your wonderful dogs. I've been checking your website and now we are all so excited. I've been telling everyone about how we loved the dogs and I've shown everyone the pictures of the "happy couples." We can hardly wait for our pup!!
Angela"
Dear Karen,
Thank you for letting our family visit your wonderful dogs and ride your horses. We have worn our new sweatshirts and told all of our friends and family about our “puppy on order!!” We can tell that you care about those dogs like crazy…….and we are anxious to welcome a new member to our family! Thank you! Ben, Stacey, and Julie"
"Dear Karen,
On behalf of our visit from Pennsylvania we wish to give you our thanks for making our stay a comfortable and memorable one.
I speak for all of us when I say that the greeting we received upon our arrival was unusual and indeed pleasurable. None of us have ever experienced such a melodious chorus of welcome. You have such a beautiful place and Ruth and I enjoyed your company and the companionship of all your wonderful dogs. We are looking forward to a time in the near future when we can spend a weekend away at your sanctuary and with those amazing dogs of yours.
Sincerely, David and Ruth"
"Your dogs are beautiful, I've wanted to check into Native American dogs for years but didn't know anyone was still breeding them. But now I breed Akitas and can't get one LOL. Looks like you guys have done excellent work. They are very true to all of the pictures I've seen, I'm Comanche, Cherokee, Black foot and Cree and my great grandmother used to have paintings of the majestic animals around her house. Just wanted to say good job." ~Angel
"Hello Karen,
Just a note to let you know that I saw your bumper sticker on a vehicle in New Jersey, where I am taking one of my husky dogs to obedience training. I also saw the Native American Indian dog pup. He is 5 months old and just a sweet, incredible looking dog. Also wanted to let you know you have beautiful ones too. Washe and Hakata We and Whitney are just classy looking animals. You are so lucky to be able to have such a fine looking group. I'll bet each one has their own distinct personality, but you know what---it makes all of the time and work that you put into your animals worthwhile. You are so fortunate--keep up the good work--it shows. Sincerely, Anne" "
Dear Karen,
I wanted to thank you for all that you do for your animals and all the love that you give them. I especially want to thank you for letting me interact with them. I think you are correct…they do remember people. They were so much more relaxed and friendly this time.
You’ll never know how much they make my heart sing, and my spirit soar!!! I was telling Linda on the way home, that my spirits are lifted, and my heart launched, just by the love and affection and those wonderful kisses from the dogs.
They truly are very special, special animals. Thanks Again!! With much affection and Love. Cheryl"
“Hi Karen,
Bryna and I arrived home (Appleton) last night at about 1930 hours central time. Cooper was fantastic! You were right about peeing at the 20 minutes mark of the trip. He started crying, we stopped and put him on the grass and he peed. We stopped every 2-2.5 hours and tried to walk him but he did not like the collar or the leash---he just laid there like a slug! There were NO accidents during the entire trip: clean as a whistle! After about 5 hours into the trip he was getting fed up with the ride, collar, etc and starting whining and then howling. I remembered something I had read about "rambunctious puppies" in the past and lightly grabbed the loose skin above his shoulders. He stopped howling and whining.
He has been great at home. He had one accident last night and left a small trail of urine to our back door. He actually goes to the door and whines when he wants to go---I wasn't expecting that to happen for a long time!
I know that you like to give your NAIDs raw meat. We had some frozen raw venison mixed with lamb and fruit---no grains. I thawed some out before we came to pick him up yesterday. We only gave him about a teaspoonful at a time: he inhaled it! What type of raw meat do you give your pups at this age? (I forgot to ask you that before we left.)
Karen, thank you for Cooper's Chetan. He is better than fantastic. Also, thank you for the tour yesterday. Once he gets bigger and housebroken, we might be back again. You, your kennels and your wonderful dogs are magnificent. They are the best big dogs I have ever been around---the best and the most beautiful!
God bless,
Dr. Bill & Bryna
Hi Karen NAIDs are the best dog breed, Kodiak (son of Fantastic Fred and Canhasa) is so loving and funny. He is right beside you, he also has to be with his canine friend Jaz. If Kodiak wants something he will nudge us with his nose till we get a treat for him or let him out side which ever he wants. He is so funny he checks every night after we go to bed if we’re in it. Then lays down on my side. In the morning when alarm goes off he goes over and wakes Steve up by making all kinds of noise. Steve lets the dogs out and when they come back they lay down stairs with him till he says go wake Mom up. Of course Kodiak is right at the bed nudging me and making all kinds of noise. He is so smart. We just love him.
They have the whole back yard which is fenced in. We also have a pond with Koi in it. And yes Kodiak plays in it. The two love to watch the fish and try and catch the toads or frogs. They also have a game of running and chasing each other it is so fun to watch. We sit in our kitchen and watch out the window at them it is just great. They are our 2 kids. We have ropes with toys hanging from trees for the two to play with plus all there other toys. We are talking of building a work out gym for them to play on. Just sending you an update on our very special family.
“Hi Karen,
Wahoo/Takota (what I call him now) son of Canhasa & Tecumseh, is the most intelligent dog I have ever seen or ever been around. He watches his environment in the way a person does. Like you said he is a people dog and loves to hang around other people. He will follow me around even if I take him to parties. He is very obedient and mellow. He is happy to go on runs with me every morning and to take naps by my desk while I study. He likes to carry big sticks home from walks to chew on in the backyard. He is always the happiest when we go backpacking and I let him run loose. He usually won’t get too far ahead (unless he hears other hikers) Unlike any dog I've ever seen he is happy to walk right beside or behind me off his leash on a trail. Attached are a couple of pictures. I think he is around 65-70 pounds now and filling out quick. Thanks for creating such an amazing breed of dog. Hank Cole”
“WE ARE IN LOVE!!!!!! LOL Yiska finally arrived here last night about 5:30 p.m. Already we are amazed at how fast he's catching on to things. He was very shy for about the 1st hour, didn't want to be touched but yet wanted to be near us. I got out some left over roast meat and each of us took turns feeding him small bites of it....that was all that was needed to break the ice, he was playing w/ us and curling up beside us on the couch to sleep w/in just the next couple of hours. My son, Nate, slept on the floor of his room w/ Yiska last night, I went down early this morning to see how they were fairing and Yiska was sleeping on his back right up against Nate, neither of them woke up, even w/ the creaking of the door. Today he's following Nate pretty much everywhere he goes. We are so incredibly happy to have him, THANK YOU!!! Sabrina”
“Karen,
Thought we'd drop in to let you know how Cytka is doing. The trip back went very well. Him & Airon slept at least half the trip home. He's doing well on potty training, only 4 accidents in the last week . One of those was our fault for not moving quick enough, but we are working together, lol. He has learned sit already & is on lay now. He'll be starting puppy obedience Feb. 7th. He's been working with me behind the desk. For now he has to until his 2nd set of shots which he'll get Feb. 3rd, but he doesn't mind, just more time to rest. He loves the kitties here at home & Nahla ( the little girl ) lets him just love all on her. She'll sleep with him at the end of the bed & let him know when he's being to rough. He has met our other dogs, but they have decided the slow approach is better, because he's so excited. Our big boy likes him, but when Cytka's excitement starts bubbling Sofer doesn't know what to think... I give him another week & Cytka will have him rolling on the floor. The older girls don't quite know yet what to think, so we are letting them go it at their own pace. As for all us people we just adore him. My 4 month old niece just thinks he is awesome & he loves her, too. He has captured all our hearts !! Thanks so much for this wonderful boy ! I'm sending some pics & will keep you updated on our big boy. Take care & tell Fred & Mecosta their boy is doing great ! He sends puppy kisses to you all !
All our thanks,
April, Jimmy, Airon, Farrah, Allura, Thelma, Sophie, Sofer, Reese, Nahla, Mo-Mo, Koda, Jtoe, & Spunky”

Hello Karen,
It's been awhile since I wrote & I thought it was about time. Cytka is such a mama's boy. He is a wonderful boy who settled in with our family like he was always meant to be here. He's such a good boy. His only issues have been fence jumping & he can dig like nobody's business, lol. I don't mind the digging, but we did put him on a lead for the jumping, as I was terrified he'd get hurt. Thankfully it seems to have taught him a lesson. A few months ago he was off the lead while we were playing in the back yard & he was being so good that I made him a deal ... if he didn't jump anymore, then he could stay off the lead & since then he hasn't jumped not once!!!
We love him so much Karen!! He does the cutest things. Like talking ... he's a big talker. When I was recording our answering machine message he kept nuzzling the phone & talking to it, so the introduction is Cytka talking :0) Everyone just loves that. As I am sure you know he loves being outdoors. Even in the rain he'll be out there snoring, belly to the sky. He fell in love with my older chow mix female & sticks to her as much as possible. He loves the other 2 as well, but she's his favorite. When we got our Rat Terrier I thought she was going to be his new favorite as he fawned all over her, but he stayed true to his first love.
When it comes to work he is my balance dog. He is so good around the dogs that he becomes my helper whenever we have a new dog who needs to be socialized. His easy going demeanor helps calm any dog. He's still choosy about the people he allows into his space, but he's come leaps & bounds in that department. He is nowhere near as stranger shy as he once was.
I am so happy that I met Tonweya & he leads me to finding you & this magnificent breed!! Cytka is everything I could have ever wanted!! I am including some new pictures for you & your satisfied customer page. He's such a camera hog & I love to show his regal beauty to anyone & everyone!! I hope you & all your babies are well. Please give his parents (Fantastic Fred & Mecosta) our love & let them know their old, big, baby boy is healthy & happy.
All our best, April, Jimmy, Airon, Thelma, Cytka, Reese, Sofer, Lyrik, & Sable”
Hi Karen,
sorry it has taken a few days to let you know how things are going. She is doing wonderful and we adore her. You raise very special dogs. they all seemed to have great personalities. It is easy to tell that they are very well taken care of and loved. I will send pics as soon as I can. I seem to have a partner in writing...lol she loves to bite my hands when Iam on the computer.
Gail”
“Hi Karen!
Well, we're well into Day 2, and Tai is incredible! She slept most of the way home yesterday, and began exploring her new surroundings the minute she got through the door. She woke a number of times during the night, but each time we were able to comfort her, and she would curl up into her blanket and go right back to sleep. She seems to be getting the hang of our household rhythms, and accommodates new people and things very easily. She's already had several visitors, and each time she has been very friendly.
She's also doing really well in the training department...we're noticing her signs, and each time we take her out, she goes...you were right about this part. Very few accidents. And the best part is how affectionate she is with us already. She licks my face, curls up her face on Hallie's lap, and cuddles up to all of us very easily. She even rolls over to have her tummy scratched. She is truly living up to her name (Sioux for "faithful")...
What an amazing girl! Smart, gorgeous, friendly and already a beloved member of our family. We'll keep you posted on her progress, and be sure to email pictures soon.
God bless you, your family and your amazing NAIDs,
Lisa, Jason, Hallie, Henry, Jonah and Tai Dolin”
“Hi Karen,
Kenda is a total joy. I do believe that water is her favorite toy. Kenda has her own kiddie pool. She can be quite a talker. Stuffy toys with squeakers. Playtime is on and off all day as with all puppies. We had her spayed a few weeks ago and she weighed 63 lbs.
A recent addition to her toy chest is squeaky tennis balls, tennis balls do not bounce the way that other balls do, they go in different directions-what a wonderful discovery.
Kenda tells you-her grandma hello, and her four legged parents Mecosta & Fantasic Fred. Please give them a big hug and extra treats.
Much Love & Many Blessings,
Gail, David, Kenda, Shane & Miracle”
“Hi again, I figured out the pictures...........hope you enjoy. We continue to take pictures daily. This morning she started to learn to sit on command...with treats at first then with and without treats. So far she hasn't forgotten what sit means this morning...even when she hasn't heard the command for awhile....I can already tell how smart she is...........lol
Barb”

“Hi Karen,
We made it through our first vet visit. Lakota was a perfect puppy. She never said boo when she received her injection.
She is settling in very well. She is finding her place with each person in the house.......she is so smart.
We love her so much that we are already talking about getting a second NAID next year.
Have a great weekend,
Barb and Lakota (she says HI to you and all the dogs and pups)”
Hi Karen!
Many, many belated thanks for the kind hospitality you showed Grant and me while we were in the process of picking up our pup between Christmas & the New Year, progeny of the late Paahuma and the still vital Mecosta.
You were so very kind to put us up on such short notice and, not least, you were a gem to help us get through customs -- I thought for a while for sure that Grant would end up in some sort of jail, as the inspectors were so suspicious and, er, uncompromising... But at the end of the day, we were home with the pup, and grateful.
Of course she cried for the first couple of nights, missing her mom and litter-/play-mates, and my heart went out to her so much that I cried with her, cradling & comforting her as much as possible for a couple of hours at a time. She howled so pitifully and long... I hurt with her. Didn't anticipate how hard it was going to be on her...
But now, at just over 4 months, she's a little Spitfire of utter confidence. Has her attitudes. Challenges us at every opportunity (to which we say, "Oh, yeah? Dream on...") Yet she's so willing, and smart. Sits & stays nicely on command and so on.
Ok, so housebreaking was a pain for a short while, until we hit on a sure-fire system: I put a set of left-over Christmas bells by the door and taught her to ring them to get our attention. It only took 3 or 4 times of showing her to get the idea and ever since we've had no "accidents." It works so well -- the dog is so happy to have perceived "control" over going out, and we're very very happy that she "tells" us via this method.
We've named her Siouxie (pronounced "Suzie") -- in part to acknowledge her Indian Dog-ness, and in a nod to one of my favorite singers and her band in the 1980s, called "Siouxie & the Banshees." That's partly because, after living this pup for a couple of weeks, we saw the "banshee" part of her starting to emerge -- a really willful critter bent on wreaking havoc with everything within range of her teeth & claws. To our delight, of course...
Every day she looks more and more like her grammy, Whitney, crossed also with Ultimate Ukiahya or even Hakata We, in addition to Paahuma. Most of Siouxie's coat is now mostly a classic "spirit dog" black & white pattern, but is also coloured with the tortoise-shell that you saw in her even as a tiny pup. Kudos -- you know your dogs!
And, as per the testimonials you post on your website, all the responses we get when people see Siouxie run along the same lines: "She's the prettiest/ most gorgeous dog I've ever seen." My nearest neighbours out here (about 1 mile away) are totally in love with Siouxie, always stopping to tell to me so... And my best friend who lives in Arizona , a dog-person too who's desperate for canine companionship, wants one of yours too -- if it can stand the heat. And even my vet, who gave Siouxie her rabies shot, was blown away by Siouxie. Said she'd seen a lot of dogs in the course of her practice,, but none so "pretty."
I attach pictures of Siouxie, to which I give you free access for your website, if you want them. I'm going to have her spayed soon (at 6 months), which partly makes me sad -- she's so gorgeous a dog -- she should have progeny. I see now why you wanted to keep her...
Many thanks again, Karen, for all the services you provided. Your kindness and hospitality were and are much appreciated.
.“Hi Karen,
Long time! I haven't been to your site for a while but bazaar circumstances brought Siouxie and I to the Canine Cafe that popped up in our Montreal neighbourhood called Mile End. We have not brought Siouxie to the city since she was a puppy and were curious as to how she'd go from running her miles of bush and river trails to walking salted sidewalks on a leash and going for a coffee with dozens of other dogs. I hardly knew her! She was modest and shy; didn't jump on anyone and the puppies that annoyed her only got a polite show of teeth. But the admirers! She settled for two couples at a table and lay down among their feet for shelter. Anyway, Nobody knows what she is, and everybody wants to know so the cafe owner goes to your site to find out. Wouldn't doubt if you get some enquiries from Montreal . This is her first adult winter and a curious habit emerged . . . the colder it is, the more time she spends outside. The first night it went down to 30 below (C) she didn't ask to come in. I finally went to look for her, expecting a tight ball of dog braced against the elements, but there she was on "her" couch on the deck, splayed out as if for a tummy rub and fast asleep! Here in the city she sleeps on the guest (sorry, her) bed just as comfortably. No wonder she gets so frustrated when we spend half our lives getting in and out of our big clothes. Also, it was great to see all the new puppies ready to come home with us. Here's a couple of new pics from Siouxie.
Take care, Grant
Hi Karen,
We thought we’d give you a short update about the trip home and the new world they’ve discovered. After we left Majestic View we drove strait through for 12 hours. The puppies sat in the backseat with the non-driver keeping them company and they were fantastic. They did not mind the leash during pit stops (four altogether) and they slept comfortably most of the way. We arrived home at 0500 on Sunday morning and they acclimated beautifully to the new surrounding. They did not eat much on Sunday but they sure picked up the slack today… the have a healthy appetite. Both learned to go up and down the stairs and explored the entire house. Leash training was very easy with the boy (we named him Tango Mecosta Forel), the girl (Cha-Cha Whitney Forel) is getting used to walk on a leash but not as good as the boy yet. She is very smart despite her young age and picking up things real fast. They love the back yard, it is fenced and puppy proved and they run around and play. It rained heavy today and they just loved playing in the rain. Tango is so much bigger and stronger and he is bossing her around and shows his dominancy. She gets back at him when he is not ready… we believe once the age and size difference is no longer a factor she will be calling the shots. We took many pictures (attached) and we are very happy with them and look forward to many years of sharing love and experiences with them. I’ll update you periodically and send photos if it is ok with you. Thanks again for introducing us to the NAID and for trusting your babies with us.
Best regards,
Ilana & Aaron”

“Hi Karen,
Its been a while since our last e-mail. Tango and Cha-Cha are growing up fast and doing great. Attached is proof of spay for Cha-Cha, but keep the refund. By letting us have them you gave us enough. Please use the money for the NAIDs. Attached are a few recent photos of Tango, son of Mecosta and Fantastic Fred, and Cha-Cha daughter of Whitney and Looker. He is very tall, long and lean, and he runs like the wind... real athlete. Cha-Cha is long, full frame and not that tall. She is powerful and very determined. Have a great Forth of July.
Best regards,
Aaron & Ilana”

“Hi Karen,
Tango is 18-months old... Cha-Cha is three weeks behind... the weather is getting nicer and it’s time for new photos. We go daily on long walks and without exception, cars will stop and people will admire them and ask many questions. There is a lot to admire beside their good looks. They are so good, exceptionally smart and full of love. Why own a dog when you can have a NAID? We will keep you posted.
Cheers,
Aaron & Ilana”

“Dear Karen,
We celebrated Tango's fifth birthday yesterday. Cha-Cha birthday is in three weeks.
Can you believe it's been five years? This is what they look now, gorgeous . Both are most fantastic dogs... we could not asked for better companions.
Fondly,
Aaron & Ilana Forel”

“Dear Karen,
We hope you had a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving. In keeping up with tradition, attached please find. . . photos of Tango and Cha-Cha. Hard to believe they are already seven. Time flies so fast... As we do every year, today they will get a steak dinner. And they deserve it. They are magnificent family members.
Thanks & God bless. Aaron & Ilana”
“Hi Karen,
I just wanted to write you to update you on our little Takoda's (that is what we've named him) progress. He is still a bit timid and will often run from people but once they are already petting him he is very gentle and quiet. He and I are getting along quite well. Brian has his signs for going out pretty much figured out by now. I was shocked when we gave him his first bath, not a single hair in the tub or on us! He already knows sit and lay down, and we're working on "come" though he often likes to ignore that one! Today he had his first trip to the PetsMart and everybody in the store just had to stop to pet him and of course ask what kind of dog he was. To my surprise, he got along very well with all the dogs he met there, including some much larger male dogs. He doesn't run from children who come up to pet him, which they love to do. He sits nicely for them which is great! Thank you again for a great puppy and for letting us play will all of your wonderful dogs while we were there. Allison”

“Hi Karen,
Just wanted to send another update on Takoda. He has been getting much better around people and he really likes other dogs. Speaking of other dogs, he and Diesel now get along great I am happy to report! We had a big group of people here this weekend so he is getting to meet new people. We start a free training/socialization class this coming Sunday. He is doing very well with training as he picks up on everything very quickly. Everyone always says how beautiful he is, as well as how big he is already! I'm sending a few more pictures from recently in the house and Harriman State Park . He is wonderful and I am thankful to you and God everyday that I have him. He is so intelligent. I will be sure to send another update soon. Hope this letter finds you well.
Allison Tyler”

“Karen,
Decided to finally send another update on Takoda Tyler as well as some pictures. The first is of him hanging out with his favorite canine companion Diesel and the other one was taken in the house.
Takoda just turned a year mid December. He is a very affectionate dog with the family, and he has never met another dog he doesn't like. Though he has quirks and sometimes likes to ignore you when called, I couldn't be without him. He is always making us laugh and cheers us when things get tough. I Hope you had a good holiday and I will try to keep in touch.

“Hi Karen,
We wanted to send you an update on Tehyatala and a couple of pictures for your website. Tehyatala (Tala for short) is everything we could have hoped for in a pup. She is a quick learner, loves to be around people, is brave (she likes to jump on Utaha when he is sleeping – so bravery is definitely there and oh yeah has sharp baby teeth), and cunning. Here is an example, when Utaha takes something from her that she is really having a good time with she will pick up something else to play with and play with it like it is the best thing in the world. Utaha will get jealous put down what he has taken away in order to take the new toy away and at this time Tala will grab the item that Utaha took away in the first place and hide under something that Utaha can’t climb under to get to her. At this time Utaha has a look on his face of “WHA?????? , Sucker”.
Tala and Utaha have hit it off very well and play constantly when they are not sleeping, eating, or training, so our goal of finding a playmate and companion for Utaha could not have gone better. Tala has hit the 3 month mark and weighs in around 30 pounds, and if this keeps up she will rival Utaha as he was 33 pounds at 3 months and now weighs in at 128 pounds 2 years later. Anne enrolled Tehyatala in a puppy training class and has been working with her religiously (I wish I could say the same) for the past 6 weeks and she has mastered all the basic commands like sit, heal, down, come and leave-it. She is very out going and everyone that comes in contact with her wants to take her home. We laugh and point them to your website, so if this keeps up you will need to open a kennel or office here in Texas (LOL).
Darren and Anne”

“Hi Karen,
We wanted to update you on Tehyatala and Utaha. Karen, Tala is one of the most magnificent animals we have ever seen (next to Utaha of course). Tehyatala graduated puppy training school with flying colors and the instructor should be contacting you to get on your waiting list. He could not believe how intelligent she is and kept commenting on how quick she picked up on things. The instructor has one of the biggest Great Danes I have ever seen (and I used to own one that I thought was huge 36” at the shoulder and weighed in around 175#). During the play sessions at the end of each class, Tala would rather play with the big Dane than with the other pups, and he was not to sure how to react to her advances. I guess being around Utaha has given her the idea that she needs to run with the big dogs. Utaha and Tehyatala are inseparable. They eat, sleep, play and try to see how much trouble that they can get into together. While Utaha has settled down some, Tala is a ball of energy. Thank you for your wonderful animals and the fantastic additions to our family. We now have 4 children (Shannon, Travis, Utaha and now Tehyatala) and 2 cats. We are attaching a couple of recent photos of Tala and Utaha feel free to post them if you would like. Take care.
God bless you and your dogs,
Darren and Anne”

“Hi Karen,
We wanted to send you a note and a couple of pictures of our First Place winner, Tehyatala. We made the trip down for the NKC Dog Show that was held in Orange Texas on May 14th. Tehyatala was FANTASTIC! She won a Blue ribbon (1st place) in her Class (Working Dog Class) and won a Red ribbon (2nd place) for Best in Show.
I can’t remember traveling with such a well behaved pet. At first we set up a traveling area in the back of our SUV for Tehyatala and she was not too happy to be there and tried to climb over the back seat a couple of times, so we moved her blanket up behind the front seats and she traveled there all the way down and back, sleeping and sitting up to look around. We never had a problem with her and it took ~8 hours to make the drive down and ~6 hours on the drive back.
Darren, Anne and Tehyatala”

“Hi Karen,
We wanted to update you on Tehyatala and Utaha.
